Recognizing the colours and identifying the colour names is an important part of a child’s development. The first colour identification by an infant is only black and white after birth. Slowly their colour visualization increases as they grow up. In general, children learn to identify colours by 18 months. They can name different colours at the age of 2.5 years to 3 years old.
Sometimes, it seems to be challenging for parents when kids used to repeat the same colour name regularly though they show different colours to them. Constant efforts to teach them the colour names by showing different objects will surely help them to understand what the actual word colour mean.
Children naturally get attracted towards bright colours. There are many ways you can help your child to learn colours in your day today life.
I have explored few activities at home along with my little one and I believe this post may help someone.
1. Display a colour chart in your kid playing area. By pointing out, teach them and it will help them to learn effectively when they see it often.
2. Shopping together: My kid is very curious and interested about vegetables and fruits. I always used to take him for shopping. After coming home, I will give vegetables and fruits in a bowl with a spoon. He too imitates cooking like me and loves to play with vegetables and fruits. When he asks what vegetable it is, I used to tell him the name with the colour: Example: "It's a red tomato". By using this way, we can able to teach its colour as well as their names.
3. Rhymes: Expose your kid to the cheerful colour rhymes and have a happy singing and dancing time together. This will surely helps them to get register the colour names as always practical way of explaining things sounds better.
4. Hand Painting: Finger or hand painting with different colours always improves the creativity of kids. You can also include objects while painting such as painting with ear buds, painting using brush, cotton balls and building blocks. My kiddo is too much interested in vegetables; hence I used even few veggies also to do paint with him.
5. Colour with crayons: Even though I bought many colouring books for him, he always insisted me to draw for him to colour. I used to draw for him as per his interest and he used to say the colour names for it to colour. By this way, you can draw along with them and avail an opportunity to them to tell the colour names of different objects.
Example: I used to draw a sky and cloud and ask him to take a colour for the same. By doing so, he tend to choose blue and white. This helps them to understand the colours as well as about the objects too.
5. Exploring nature: Outdoor play possesses an important role to know about colours. I took him regularly to park. It helped me to tell about various colours surrounds us. Example: I used to take three different colour leaves and teach him as “Green leaf, Yellow leaf and Orange leaf".
6. Colour Sorting using ice cream sticks: I painted egg box with different colours and used ice cream sticks to insert into it.
7. Colour sorting using buttons: I wrote names of the colours in a small piece of paper and kept inside the egg box. As per the colour names, he has to sort the colour buttons and put it inside the box.
8. Colour sorting using toilet rolls: I have collected the toilet rolls and pasted a white sheet on the above. Painted different colours and that's it our colour sorting kit is ready. On the other hand, made small rectangle piece of papers and coloured it using different colours. By taking a colour paper from a bowl, he has to put the paper in the correct coloured toilet roll box. Also, with the same kit, instead of small coloured papers, I wrote the colour names on it. This way, he got an opportunity to read the colour names and put the same in the correct coloured toilet roll box.
9. Colour sorting using Sketch pencils, crayons and colour pencils:
Put all colour pencils in a plate and keep it ready. Then write the name of the colours on the writing board. Ask the kid to read the colour name, and choose the same colour from the plate.
10. Colour sorting using toys: Put all kids’ favourite toys in a box. That's it now we are ready to play a game. You can tell them a name of the toy along with its colour and ask them to take and give it to you. Example: Can you please take and give me a red colour fire truck?
11. Colour sorting using balloons: My kiddo is so crazy about balloons. He simply loves to play with different colour balloons and happy to see the balloons falling down from the top. I took this an opportunity to teach him different colours and off course we played a colour sorting game using balloons.
12. Colour Sorting using pom poms: I have collected use and throw water bottles. Painted different colours in it. Using the pom pom we have done colour sorting activity.
You can also do colour sorting using small colour sticks, colour beads and colour clips.
Hope this helps. Happy Parenting:)
