NUMBERS & COUNTING

Numbers grabs an integral part of a Child's learning and development. In the beginning, Infants usually starts to recognize numbers as dots. Gradually as a part of their growing, we can introduce numbers in their daily life. Example: Mom is having two apples in my hand; Dad will get you ten balloons from the shop. These kinds of sentences support them to have a deeper sense of understanding about Numbers. At the age of two, children slowly starts to identify small group of objects. There are many ways you can help your child to learn numbers and counting in your day today life.

Examples:

1. Display a number chart in front of their play area. By pointing out, teach them and it will help them to learn effectively when they see it often.

2. Sing rhymes along with them which involve numbers and counting.

3. Read sensory touch and feel books which involve numbers and counting.

4. Get a number board puzzle and help them to explore and match the numbers on their own.

5. Play counting games with their favourite toys like counting of a wooden blocks, small cars, and building blocks and so on.

To summarize, counting is the basic step of mathematics. I have explored few activities at home along with my little one and I believe this post may help someone.

Once they understand the numbers before and after from one to ten, then you can start the counting activities slowly using your day today items at home. I used chickpeas, peas, vegetables, fruits, Marconi, corn flakes, Pasta, ice cream sticks, colour sticks, Building blocks and so on. Initially you can start counting up to five and slowly you can increase it up to ten.

You can always use any toys for counting as per the child's interest. As usual my kid interest always towards vegetables and fruits and I started my counting activity with him with vegetables and fruits.

I always prefer to draw dots for counting in general. You can always draw anything as per your child's interest and have fun together.
