SHAPES

“Shapes are crazy"

Learning shapes are always fun. From the early age, kids used to observe the shapes around them even if they don't know the name of the shape. Shape is one of the fundamental mathematical skills a kid should attain before starting their school. The formation of shapes and its understanding helps the kid not only in reading but also in writing. There are many ways by which we can teach the shapes names to kids in our day today life. I would like to share my ideas in this post and I believe that it may help someone.

1. Display a Shapes chart in front of their play area. By pointing out, teach them and it will help them to learn effectively when they see it often.

2. Display all the household items of different shapes to them and tell the name of the shape. Example: Take a plate and tell them" The plate is circle in shape"

3. Get a shape board puzzle and help them to explore and match the shapes on their own.

4. Draw the shapes on a writing board using different colours and name any one shape at a time and ask them to touch the shape.

5. Ice cream sticks: Draw different shapes in a paper. Ask your kid to place the ice cream sticks on it.

6. Colour sticks: I created different shapes using small colour sticks and taught him the names and its number of sides. During this, I involved him also to arrange the sticks.

7. Vegetables and fruits: My kiddo loves to play with vegetables and fruits. Hence I involved him in cutting few veggies in different shapes. This also enhances his cutting skill and holding a real knife confidently while cutting.

8. Matching activity: I created a matching activity of different shapes using ice cream sticks. One stick carries one half of the shape and the second stick carries the next half of the shape.

9. Straws: You can also create shapes using straws and teach them the names as well as its sides.

10. Cardboard cutting is always fun. I created shapes in cardboard, done cutting into half and painted too. He enjoyed this a lot and played its matching activity for many times.

11. Shapes Chapatti: I am so confident that all of you have done shapes in chapatti dish for your kids. Even I too tired and he loved to eat by himself saying each shape name. This also helps in self feeding.

12. My little one interest always made me to think out of my comfort zone. One day we together formed shapes using vegetables after our shopping. Vegetables we used to form shapes are tinda, lady's finger, beans, carrot, tomato, green chilli, and small onion. To my surprise after this activity, he used to ask for vegetables from fridge and he himself will do some shapes, flowers and many more.

13. Shapes sorting: We had a wooden shapes toy for him. Using that, we did a shapes and colour sorting activity.

Hope this helps. Happy Parenting:)
